Event Comment: Some Noise at the Dancers, but not great (Cross). Tomorrow will be publish'd The Dancers Damn'd; Or The Devil to Pay at the old House. Price 6d. Printed for R. Griffiths. [Appears to be an eyewitness, journalistic account, but turns into a considered attack upon mob patriotism. Author purports to describe the action which took place Wednesday night 12 Nov. 1755: 'When the Chinese scene was expos'd, the leader of the Loyal party advanced to the front of the Gallery and thus bespake the House: "O Britons! O my Countrymen! Ye will certainly not suffer these foreign clogs to amuse us. Our destruction is at hand. These sixty dancers are come over with a design to undermine our constitution. This Navarre is Marshall Lewendahl, and the least amongst them is an ensign, disguised in order to perpetrate our ruin!"' After alternate encouragement and abuse Reason, who had descended from the clouds, spoke: "I came hither by the persuasion of Truth and Justice to tell you that amongst all this number of dancers that now stand ready to entertain you there are no more than Four French men and about the same number of females; that their Chief is a Swiss Protestant, who, had not his merit protected him would have been hiss'd off the stage at Paris, for being a Swiss Protestant. And will you damn him for the same reason? Will you pay less regard to Genius than a French Audience? Here a cat-call and one cried out: 'Swiss! What the devil do we know of Swiss! a Swiss is a foreigner, and all foreigners are Frenchmen; and so damn you all!"'] Receipts: #140 (Cross)

The Translator has indeed, with great propriety, laid his version at Mr Garrick's door, since there is nobody so well qualified to take the orphan under their protection."] Printed for R. Event Comment: [C$Colman published in the Public Advertiser this day extracts from the Oxonian in Town showing what favorable things were said of the Irish in it. He apparently did so to forstall a predicted riot by Irishmen who feared their nation was slandered because the scoundrels in the play were Irish. See E. R. Page, George Colman, The Elder (New York, 1935), p. 168. Monitor No V (21 Nov. 1767) includes a letter from Timothy Calfskin requesting refund of 4 shillings since his wife was frightened by the noise of the "wild Irish" and ran from the playhouse.] Receipts: #191 4s. Neville MS Diary: Went...to see Cymbeline...chiefly to hear Powell speak an occasional prologue. Would not have gone had I known it was only a stale piece of flattery to George. [See The Gentleman's Magazine, 9 July p. 346: "On shutting up the playhouse in Covent Garden at the end of the season, admission into the theatre having been denied to Mr H and R through any other passage but Mr Powell's House, those gentlemen at the head of a large posse on the 17th of last month, [June] made a forcible entry by breaking open a window near the playhouse door in Hart street; after which they expelled by violence Mr Sargeant the Housekeeper, all his family and others; but the acting managers not being inclined to submit to the arbitrary proceedings of their colleagues, immediately applied for redress, where redress was effectually to be had, and this day they were formally expelled by virtue of a warrant from under the hand and seal of the high sherrifs of London and Middlesex, and the old housekeeper, Mr Sargeant, restored to his office of trust, to the great mortification of one of the champions who had been heard to say: That he had now got possession and d--n him if he would not keep it while he had a drop of blood in his body, and while there was one brick upon another belonging to the house."
