Prompter, 18 Feb.: Here I had an Opportunity of making an Observation very much in Favour of the Town; viz, That the Accusation of Bad Taste is very falsly and unjustly brought against them, since if the Town had really the bad Taste, they are represented to have, the Play would have run the remaining Part of the Season, in an uninterrupted Course of Applause. I had likewise an Opportunity of observing much more Impartiality than I expected, in the Behaviour of the Audience, for till almost the third Act was over, they sat very quiet, in hopes it would mend

Event Comment: A serious riot took place this evening occasioned by Fleetwood's continuing raised prices to old entertainments. Manager called for by audience. Not being an actor, he pleaded privilege of being exempted from appearing on stage and sent word by a performer he would confer in his room with any deputation. One was sent from pit, and house waited patiently its return.--Genest, IV, 137. To The Gentlemen of the Town: Gentlemen: From what pass'd last night at Drury Lane Playhouse, I think I may congratulate you on the long-wish'd for Conquest over the Hireling Encouragers of the Pantomime Entertainments. Give me leave, therefore, Gentlemen to hope, that you will not be wanting in your endeavours to quashing future attempts to introduce what is manifestly an encroachment on the Honour and Dignity of the stage, and a glaring Imposition on the town. Mr Bayes: By the unanimous Desire of a number of your Friends here assenbled, who intend to sit in judgment upon you on Friday, I take upon me to advise you in some Particulars, as to your present Undertaking. Let not any Success you might meet with at one End of the Town where the Audience must be composed of a different Class of People from what you may expect at Covent Garden, tempt you to think of mimicking an Actress whom the Town doats upon; and particularly avoid Puffing; a Scheme long ago worn threadbare, but lately quite demolish'd by an enterprizing Genius. Not even an Epilogue from the Gods would be of any Service now; and therefore if you have anything that's new, any fiery Flights of Fancy, and all that, let them lie dormant till the Time of Action, and then endeavour to elevate and surprize. Event Comment: [During this year was published the Tricks of the Town Laid Open; or, a Companion for a Country Gentleman. Consisting of seventeen letters from a Gentleman in London to his friend in the country, to dissuade him from coming to London. Letters VI and VII are on the humors, customs, and tricks of the playhouse. They give an amusing account of the ways in which whores, sharpers, bullies and bawds identify a newcomer to town in the playhouse and try to bilk him. No. VII gives also some general account of audience reactions to plays. Most go, it says, for the singing, dancing, scenes and fine costumes. His conclusion: go to the theatre only if you have three hours to waste.

Event Comment: Benefit for Barry. Pit and Boxes laid together, and Stage, for better accommodation of the Ladies, will be form'd into Front and Side Boxes. Tickets to be had of Barry at the corner of Bow St., and of Hobson at the Stage Door. [This month was printd The Town, a Satire by Wm. Kenrick, with especial attack upon Garrick and Garrick's plays. In Miss in her Teens, he boasts the strange pretense, To satire Coxcombs, while he murders sense." Kenrick is one of the few who criticizes Garrick (p. 21) for playing a low character Abel Drugger, rather than a king. He yields indirect praise to Janeton Auretti by blaming the town for cheering her dance, while neglecting the players: @Yet if Janeton shakes her slender feet@How loud the thunder clatters through the Pit.@ Prologue intended to have been spoken on the Revival of The Distress'd Mother, for the Benefit of Mr Barry, but omitted through some misunderstanding.
