Event Comment: Daily Advertiser, 15 Dec: The Opera of Adriano, now performing with great Applause, particularly for some fine Songs in it, compos'd for Signior Farinello, having been thought by the King to be rather too long, M. Veracini has shorten'd it, and his Majesty has declar'd his Intention of being present at it [Tuesday 16]. We hear, that after this Opera has had its run, there will be a new one call'd Mithridates, the Drama of which is wrote in English by Colley Cibber, Esq; Poet Laureat, and translated from thence into Italian

Event Comment: A New Opera. [Librettist not known. Music by Handel.] London Daily Post and General Advertiser, 13 May: Last Night was perform'd ... Atalanta ...in which was a new Set of Scenes painted in Honour to this Happy Union, which took up the full length of the Stage: The Fore-part of the Scene represented an Avenue to the Temple of Hymen, adorn'd with Figures of several Heathen Deities. Next was a Triumphal Arch on the Top of which were the Arms of their Royal Highnesses, over which was placed a Princely Coronet. Under the Arch was the Figure of Fame, on a Cloud, sounding the Praises of this Happy Pair. The Names Fredericus and Augusta appear'd above in transparent Characters. Thro' the Arch was seen a Pediment supported by four Columns, on which stood two Cupids embracing, and supporting the Feathers, in a Princely Coronet, the Royal Ensign of the Prince of Wales. At the farther End was a View of Hymen's Temple, and the Wings were adorn'd with the Loves and Graces bearing Hymenael Torches, and putting Fire to Incense in Urns, to be ofter'd up upon this Joyful Union. The Opera concluded with a Grand Chorus, during which several beautiful Illuminations were display'd. . . . There were present their Majesties, the Duke, and the Four Princesses

It being the first Time of Mr Handel's Appearance this Season, he was honour'd with extraordinary and repeated Signs of Approbation

Event Comment: LLondon Daily Post and General Advertiser, 24 May: May 23, 1738. All Persons that have subscrib'd or are willing to subscribe twenty Guineas for Italian Opera to be perform'd next Season at the King's Theatre...under my Direction, are desired to send ten Guineas to Mr Drummond the Banker....and Whereas I declared I would undertake the Operas provided I can agree with the Performers, and that 200 Subscriptions are procured, and as the greatest Part ob the Subscribers have already paid the 10 Guineas; it is desired that the remaining Subscribers will be pleased to send the Money to Mr Drummond, on or before the 5th of June next....J. Event Comment: [Covering all three columns of the front page of the Daily Advertiser is a letter defending the opera as an institution. The writer states that suggestions were made to close the theatres during the Jacobite Rebellion, that the cost of presenting operas during a season is #14,000, that about #2,000 of this is carried out of the country by the singers.

Event Comment: A New Opera [a pasticcio by Gluck, chiefly from Tigrane, Sofonisbe, and Ipermestra; libretto revised by F. Vanneschi from B. Vitturi (Loewenberg, Annals of Opera, p. 104); see also W. B Squire, Musical Quarterly, I (1915).

Event Comment: [Whereas, from various accidents and disappointments the Undertaking an opera for the next year was resolv'd upon too late in the season to permit of solliciting the Subscriptions in the Usual Manner; and as the Proposals for the ensuing year are of a different nature, and, as it is presumed, much more to the Advantage of the Subscribers than any hitherto offered, it has been thought proper to take this method of informing the Publick, that attendance will be given at the Opera-Office in the Haymarket, every Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday, from ten o'clock in the Morning till three in the afternoon, in order to shew the Proposals, take in subscriptions, and deliver our proper receipts.

Event Comment: The subscribers to the Second Subscription for Operas, are desired to take Notice, that on Thursday Morning next will be a General Rehearsal of the new Opera called Mitridate upon the Stage, agreeable to the printed Proposals the Doors will be open'd at Ten, and the Rehearsal will begin at Eleven of the Clock. No Persons to be admitted without a Subscriber's Ticket, and each Ticket will admit four Persons

Event Comment: [Whereas a Subscription is begun for an Italian Opera this Season, which will open Nov. 14, Gentlemen and Ladies who please to subscribe, are desir'd to send to the Opera office of the said Theatre.

Event Comment: Rehears'd...the Opera of Lucius Verus: This Drama Consists of Airs, borrow'd entirely from Mr Handel's favourite Operas; and so may (probably) be justly styled the most exquisite Composition of Harmony, ever offer'd to the Publick. Those Lovers of Musick among us, whose Ears have been charm'd with Farinello, Faustina, Senesino, Cuzzoni, and other great Performers will now have an Opportunity of Reviving their former delight, which, if not so transporting as then, may yet prove a very high Entertainment. Mr Handel is acknowledged (universally) so great a Master of the Lyre; that nothing urg'd in Favour of his Captial Performances can reasonably be consider'd as a Puff (General Advertiser, 13 Nov.)

Event Comment: We hear from the King's Theatre in the Haymarket, that as the Celebrated Opera Dido, wrote by Abbat Metastasio, and set to Musick by Sig Hasse, cannot be got ready for Representation till almost a fortnight, the Opera Lucius Verus (consisting of chosen Airs from the Compositions of Mr Handel) will be performed next Saturday (Daily Advertiser)

Event Comment: Other Decorations entirely new. A new Comic Opera [by Ciampi]. The New Comic Opera, entitled Le Tre Cicisbei Ridicoli, was perform'd last Tuesday at the King's Theatre in the Hay Market; though large Bills were stuck up in various Parts of the Town and Hand Bills dispers'd insinuating the Contrary (General Advertiser, 18 March)

Event Comment: By a Set of English Performers translated into French from The Beggar's Opera. Nothing under the full Price will be taken during the Time of the whole Performance, or any money returned after the Curtain is drawn up. To begin at six o'clock. Prices: 5s., 3s., 2s. As this is the first attempt of the kind that was ever made by the English, 'tis hoped the Town will not be offended, that we endeavour to equal the Foreigners in everything, that may conduce to divert or to please them; yet this apology we beg leave to make, that if in our Performance a little of our Native Accent should be discover'd, we humbly hope an English audience will excuse it
