Bransby ye Lockit and Mrs Abington Lucy pretty well...Polly-$Mrs Vincent, who is now too old for ye character, and I think wants feeling...One Tomlinson, who had a 4th of the Benefit, spoke an Epilogue in the character of a Beggar, but by one party hissing and a greater clapping, could not hear it.--At Covent Garden a Hurdy-Gurdy man and girl play in the whore's scene, and as the Highwaymen march out, one returns and kisses MacHeath, and Shuter says some things Yates did not, but perhaps they are additions of his own (Neville MS Diary)

Event Comment: Mainpiece: An English Opera composed and directed by Dr Arne. In this opera two new performers appeared,--Mr Rathom who played Artaxerxes, a bad figure, extreamly aukward, and much hissed--the other Mrs Forbes, who played Arbaces, a small figure a good voice, was well received, and went decently through the part (Hopkins Diary)

Event Comment: Afterpiece: In the Manner it was performed at Stratford. This Ode was as it was perform'd at the Jubilee at Stratford upon Avon Dedicating a Building & Erecting a Statue to Shakespeare it was written by D. G. Esqr. and the Music by Dr Arne Mr G. speaking in this performance is equal to anything he ever did and met with as much applause as his heart could desire. Event Comment: Several of the songs dew-set by Mr Fisher. [The Tete-a-Tete in the Town and Country Magazine for this month (pp. 569-70) tells of Miss Catley's affair with Col. Lascelles. Her father a hackney coachman, her mother a washerwoman. She met Lascelles in Dublin where she was playing in Mossop's theatre, and condescended to live with him.

Event Comment: Afterpiec : A New Burletta [by George Colman]. The Characters New Dress'd. The Music entirely New composed by Mr Arnold. Books of the Burletta to be had at the Theatre. Event Comment: Paid Mr Kirk for copper tickets as per bill #5 5s. (Account Book). [These copper checks (illustrated in W. J. Lawrence, Old Theatre Days and Ways, London, 1935, p. 86) were supposedly given, by the box office keeper, to each person who entered the boxes. They were there dropped into a slit box by those who paid the money gatherer between the acts, or were returned to the box office by the holder if he left before the third act. The system was devised to check the receipts from the money gatherers against the number of copper tickets issued. Collusion between the Box office keeper and the gatherer could occur, but was checked by a third office, the numberer who counted heads, from his central position, as the gatherers went their rounds.] Receipts: #222 1s. Event Comment: This Farce was wrote on purpose to Shew Mrs Barry in an Irish part. She did not succeed so well in it as was expected but upon the Whole the Farce was well perform'd & met with great Applause (Hopkins Diary). [Macmillan note from Kemble differs slightly. [The account in Town and Country Magazine of the afterpiece: "Upon the whole it is very indifferent production and as it did not meet with the applause that was expected, no one has adopted the bantling. The many are of opinion that Garrick had a hand in it, as it is got up to the best advantage, and a new dance is introduc'd between the acts to put the audience in a good humour for the succeeding scenes. Mrs Sutton is the principal dancer in the Irish Fair, in which she displayed great spirit and activity.
