As the tragedy of Elfrida, written (after the Greek manner) by that most excellent poet Mr Mason, has met with such singular applause at Covent Garden Theatre, I cannot help lamenting that our English Roscius has never had a play of Sophocles (translated into English blank verse) represented at Drury Lane. The plays in general, are the finest ever written; and the Oedipus Tyrannus is, in my opinion, the properest to be represented at present, both for the grandeur of the chorusses and the magnificence of the scenery. I mention this because I think this new species of drama would be better received, by an English audience, than all the Golden Pippins, or Nonpareils, that have lately appeared on the stage. [Woodward and Foote]: Oh! ho! is it come?-What at your Irish tricks again?-No my Dear, they won't do; I am too well establish'd here; Do you think we have so soon forgot your H-n Puffs: you defeat me in Ireland! Very likely; as if we did not know you!-but what you (or the whole Town) could mean by propagating such a report, the Devil take me if I know; unless you have taken an antipathy to the Irish, and found out this method to damn their judgment at once. Which by the Bye, Hal, would be a little ungrateful, considering how you profited by their ignorance. Beggar's Opera and Commissary. Found the Pit not over fifth full, and on the 4th bench from orchestra orange woman showed me Pol. Kennedy alias Mrs Bevon, on which I went and sat immediately before her, and talked with her much during the play. Pol. Kennedy in cloak and large hat. She is tall, large and raw-boned. Irish features, yet had something in her face and person necessarily attracting notice--was very civil, curteous, and chatty (Baker, Diary, p. 270). [Pol.
