Event Comment: Epilogue by David Garrick. Second Ballet: with New Scenes [by deLoutherbourg] and Dresses [by Lupini]. Two new Grand Ballets, composed by Gallet, were introduced in this Piece (The Maid of the Oaks) in which Gallet and Mlle Dupre made their first Appearance upon the Eng. Stage--the first Dance, which was to be in the 2nd Act, was obliged to be deferred till the end of the 3rd Act, as Lupini, who made the Dancers Dresses, had not brought them to the House--this put us all into great Confusion, and Dodd made an Apology to the Audience, that an unforseen Accident had prevented the Dance being done in the proper Place. At the beginning of the 3rd Act most of the Dresses were brought, but not all, and some of the Dancers were obliged to put on what Dresses could be got for them--They were all very much confused--the Music also was not perfect. Gallet went on, and spoke in French to the Audience, and told the Band that he wished they had any Heads. In the first Dance Mlle Dupre fell down, and a little after Gallet fell down, but (they) did not hurt themselves, and the Dance went on--and even with all these Disadvantages was much applauded (Hopkins Diary). [In the Shakespearean Pageant, with figures from seventeen of his plays, the chief effectiveness lay with the Musicians who ushered in each group with appropriate music: Martial Music-The Roman Characters of Coriolanus and Julius Caesar; Soft Music-Antony and Cleopatra; Grand Music, Old English Characters-King John, Richard III, Henry VIII: Magical Music, "above, about, underneath" for Prospero; Macbeth's Music; Fairy Music-Oberon and Titania; Solemn Music for Tragic Muse accompanied by Othello, Hamlet, the Ghost, Mad Ophelia and Lear with Cordelia; Dead March in Saul-Juliet's Bier with attendants; Allegro for the Comic Muse-Falstaff, Touchstone, Launcelot, Malvolio; Andante-Florizel and Perdita, Portia Antonio and Bassanio; Flourish-for Car drawn by the muses carrying Shakespeare's Bust; Final Song by Mrs Mattocks, "Sweetest Bard that Ever Sung, Nature's glory, Fancy's Child--." The Prelude is, in print, entirely favorable to Garrick's effort at Stratford. But it could be rendered in a mercilessly ironical manner if the three participating actors so chose. [The English Mirror is not the name of a play.] Mr Shuter begs leave to acquaint the Public that his English Mirror is highly polished, and he hopes it will give the greatest Satisfaction, especially as it is the true English Manufacture reflecting the most striking Views of Modern Times and National Glory. He would be very far from imposing upon the Inhabitants of this great Metropolis, and, unconscious of a Puff, he takes upon him to say that the Gay and Learned will find his Piece ornamented with a Festoon of Flowers gathered by an admitted Genius on the Banks of Avon and enriched with Wreaths twined by the Fingers of the Muses. Here it may be said Pomona has given the Apple Wit, in which every agreeable Flavour is combined, and Bacchusr has sent a Store of genuine Falernian from a Receipt which anciently belonged to Homer, and has lately been discovered with the Ruins of Herculaneum. In fact we shall give a new Exhiliration to Mirth, and dilate the Sides of Laughter, make Vice bleed under the corrective Lash, and give a Lecture that shall stimulate Virtue to pursue the Road of Happiness.
