Event Comment: Benefit for the Education of a Young Gentleman in Distress. Mainpiece: At the Particular desire of several Ladies of Quality. The Gentleman for whom this Benefit is intended, after having gone thru a scholastic Education, being by a series of Misfortunes too tedious to enumerate, deprived of an academical one, takes this opportunity humbly to submit his case to the publick, and beg their indulgence so far as to enable him to go through his studies at the University

[An Epistle from Mr Theophilus Cibber, to David Garrick, Esq. London: 1755, dated Nov. 20, 1755: When Th. Cibber returned from Guilford last July, he found a discharge from Covent Garden (p.5) He got a license from the Duke of Grafton to open Little Haymarket (p. 6). He began and acted ten nights in three weeks, with some success, but when Drury Lane opened, Th. Cibber was ordered to stop (p. 7). He then petitioned the Duke of Grafton to have The Haymarket for two or three times weekly for the rest of the season. He hoped that the Little Haymarket might be a nursery for young performers, as well as for new pieces (p. 24). See dl 24 Nov.

Event Comment: The young gentleman who played the part of Valdore , being indisposed, makes it necessary to defer the new play of the Insolvent (designed for this day) till Thursday the 16th, when it will be performed with a variety of new entertainments as will be particularly specified in the bills. The part being a principal one, and of a considerable length (as the notice of the Gentleman's Indisposition is but just receiv'd) makes it impracticable to have it acted sooner. The tickets that could not come in on the first night for want or room will be admitted on Thursday

His broken voice is appropriate in that character; tho' I am apt to imagine that certain nice inflections of voice in expressing ye language of passion, are mistaken for a failure of ye voice itself...[partial cast]. Young Barry was tolerable in some parts of Edgar, but very inanimate in ye last scenes...The House very full

Event Comment: The People flock'd about the doors by Two o'clock. there never was a greater Overflow-Mr G. was never happier in Lear -the Applause was beyond description 3 or 4 loud Claps Succeeding one another at all his exits and many Cry'd out Garrick for Ever &c., &c. House (Hopkins Diary). [Kemble's note differs slightly.] Paid Mr Short, Chorus Singer #1 10s. (Treasurer's Book). Hannah More wrote to Mrs Gwatkin: The eagerness of the people to see Garrick is beyond anything you can have an idea of. You will see half a dozen duchesses and countesses a night in the upper boxes: for the fear of not seeing him at all, has humbled those who used to go, not for the purpose of seeing but being seen; and they now courtsy to the ground for the worst places in the house" (Hampden, Journal). [Letter to David Garrick, Esq on his appearance in Lear last night 13 May: The correspondent who signs himself Stock Fish and who claims to have been one of the survivors of the Black Hole of Calcutta, and who took a young lady from the country to see Garrick's last performance, blames him for endangering the lives of his majesties subjects for not providing proper bars, lanes, and queue lines to handle the crowds: "I went with intention to get into the Pit as the most eligible Part of the House (for your Boxes are always engag'd) and we got to the Door in Vinegaryard about five o'clock. Here the Passage to the first Door was too full for me to entertain any Hopes of getting in that Way, we therefore made for Catharine-street but the Multitudes of People waiting for the Opening of the Gallery-doors, rendered it impossible for us to get along through the Court; we therefore made a Circuit, and at length arrived opposite the Door in Catharine-street, where it was with Difficulty we could keep our Stands on a Foot Pavement....You will be absolutely inexcusable, if after this Warning you neglect to adopt some Method for the Security of the Lives of his Majesties Subjects on similar Occasions.--What think you of the following Scheme, viz. To keep the outer Doors next the Street shut, till the inner ones are opened ; and then, by a Proper bar, to prevent more than one at a Time entering, who shall there pay Entrance-money, and receive the Tickets of Admission through the inner Doors' (Public Advertiser 18 May).] Receipts: #308 1s. A Subscription of Two Guineas and a Half will receive Eleven Tickets for the Boxes, transferable either to a Lady or a Gentleman; any number of Tickets may be used nightly at the pleasure of the Subscriber. Event Comment: Rich's Company. The evidence for this date as the premiere of The Relapse is Jennens' report on 19 Nov. 1696 that Drury Lane expected to produce a new play on this date, coupled with the fact that Lady Morley saw this play on 25 Nov. 1696. The play was advertised in the Post Boy, 26-29 Dec. 1696. Preface, Edition of 1697: One word more about the Bawdy, and I have done. I own the first Night this thing was acted, some indecencies had like to have happen'd, but 'twas not my Fault. The fine Gentleman of the Play, drinking his Mistress's Health in Nants Brandy, from six in the Morning, to the time he wadled upon the Stage in the Evening, had toasted himself up, to such a pitch of Vigor, I confess I once gave Amanda for gone, and am since (with all due Respect to Mrs Rogers) very sorry she scap'd; for I am confident a certain Lady (let no one take it to herself that is handsome) who highly blames the Play, for the barenness of the conclusion, wou'd then have allowed it, a very natural Close. Gildon, English Dramatick Poets, p. 145: This Play was received with mighty applause. Cibber, Apology, I, 216: This Play (the Relapse) from its new and easy Turn of Wit, had great Success, and gave me, as a Comedian, a second Flight of Reputation along with it

London Post, 5-8 July 1700: This day at the Theatre Royal in Drury-lane, will be presented a Play called, Sophonisba, or Hannibals Overthrow, not performed by the publick Actors but all by young Gentlemen and Ladies for their own Diversion. The House to be fitted up and illuminated in a new and particular manner. Tickets One Guinea. Gallery Half a Guinea. [Text by Samuel Humphreys. Their Majesties, Prince, and three eldest Princesses present.] Daily Advertiser, 20 March: An Entertainment, perhaps, the most magnificent that has ever been exhibited on an English Theatre....The Composition of the Musick is by no means inferior to the most finish'd of that Gentleman's Works; but the Disposition of the Performers was in a Taste beyond what has been attempted. There was a very great Number of Instruments by the best Hands, and such as would properly accompany three Organs. The Pit and Orchestre were cover'd as at an Assembly, and the whole House Illuminated in a new and most beautiful manner. [See also Lady A. Irwin to Lord Carlisle, in Deutsch, Handel, pp. 309-10.

Event Comment: HHenry Carey died. We are informed, General Theophilus Cibber arriv'd in Town on Saturday Morning. He made a Campaign this last summer in Dublin, where he maintained the Field, with great reputation against the illustrious Count Sheridan. We further hear the ioung Gentleman has taken up his Winter Quarters in the Territories of Covent Garden; but his scene of action, 'tis said, will be Drury Lane. Tis rumored he will be soon join'd by some Auxiliaries, draughted from the Forces on the Irish Establishment, who are to supply vacant commissions of the present Theatrical Mutineers and Deserters--Daily Advertiser

Event Comment: Afterpiece: Not acted these 7 years. [See 31 Dec. 1744.] The Tragedy of the Siege of Damascus is now in rehearsal at Covent Garden, in which Mr Barry will perform the part of Phocyas , being his first appearance in that character. And a Gentleman who never performed on any stage, will soon appear in the Character of Richard III
