Event Comment: A new Comic Opera--Music by Galuppi. [Text--Goldoni. First performance in England. The text notes music originally by Baldassar Galuppi called Buranello, and perfected by Gioacchino Cocchi. Burney (History of Music, II, 860) notes the extreme popularity of this piece, and the success of the Paganinis as singers in it.

By His Majesty's Command No Persons admitted behind the Scenes [Repeated. The 1760 Libretto of Arianne e Teseo calls for Prologue to be sung by Signora Mattei on this night.

Event Comment: A Burletta, Benefit for Sg & Sga Paganini, [Who] being desirous of returning to Italy...take this Opportunity to express their most grateful Sense of the many Favours with which they have been honoured in this Kingdom; and being willing that the Necessitous should share in that Bounty which they owe more to the Generosity of the English Nation than to their own Merits, they have allotted a fourth part of the Profits which may arise from the above Burletta (free from all Expense whatever) towards the carrying on and extending the Utility of the Asylum or House of Refuge for Female Orphans...and another Part of the aforesaid Profits will be given towards relieving old Signor Cataneo, who, during forty Years was useful to the Operas, but is now in extreme Distress; and the Manager, who is at the Expence of this Benefit, has chearfully consented to the Disposition here mentioned. As it is intended to apply the whole Profits which may arise from letting out the Servants Gallery [at 2s. 6d. each person] for the Benefit of the Asylum, over and above what was before alloted to it, 'tis humbly hoped that the Nobility, Gentry, etc. will not take it amiss if their Servants are not admitted that Night, as has been the Practice at this Theatre on Occasions of Charity. Tickets will delivered out for this Benefit, this day at the Opera Office, and signed by Mr Crawford, and all Monies given for Tickets above their usual Price, is to be shared in the Charity abovementioned. Tickets delivered for 23 March will be taken

Event Comment: An Oratorio composed by Sg Gio. Adol. Hasse, With Additions by Sg Giardini. End of the first Act a Concerto on the Organ by Mr Burton, In Act the third a Hautboy Concerto by the two Signori Besozzi, lately come from abroad. Pit and boxes 10s. 6d. First Gallery 5s. Upper Gallery 3s. 6d. Tickets and Places to be had of Mr Varney, at the stage-door of the Theatre. The profits of this performance will be given to A Public Charity. [No receipts recorded by Cross.

Event Comment: [The opera seems not to have been acted, according to note 14 Dec. "The managers of the opera are extremely concerned for the Disappointment of the house last night by Sg Lovatini's illness. As soon as they were apprised of it they took every precaution by posting bills, etc. and sent word to as many subscribers as time would permit."

Event Comment: A pasticcio, with libretto by G. A. Migliavacca; music by F. G. Bertoni, Handel, Davide Perez (Deutsch, Handel, p. 793). A New Opera, with new Decorations and Dances. It will be performed Tuesday and Zenobia on Saturdays (Public Advertiser)

Event Comment: A new serious Opera [a pasticcio]. Music by different Masters. To begin at 6 p.m. on account of the Prologue. [Note: The 1760 Libretto at Library of Congress designates the "Musical Prologue sung by Signora Mattei" on 22 Nov. The prologue consists of recitative and a brief air of two quatrains.

Event Comment: A New Opera. [Text by Pietro Metastasio. Done into English by Humphreys. Music presumably by Leonardo Leo.] Pit and Boxes at half a guinea. [Their Majesties, Prince, and three eldest Princesses present.] See also Lord Hervey and his Friends, pp. 145-46. Daily Advertiser, 6 Nov.: There were present a very numerous Audience; and Signora Celeste Gismondi, who lately arriv'd here, perform'd a principal Part in it with universal Applause. We hear that this Opera was not compos'd by Mr Handell, but by some very eminent Master in Italy

Event Comment: Benefit for Signora Galli. Composed by Handel. Signora Galli will sing the Part of Alexander, with all the original songs of Senesino. [As Senesino created this role in 1726, the piece performed tonight may be Handel's, not Lampugnani's; see kings, 15 Nov. 1743 and Deutsch, Handel, p. 647.

Event Comment: A New English Opera. The Music Compos'd by Mr Rush. Signora Cremonini, Clementini, made her first appearance on this Stage in the Character of Eliza. Sings very well, very Graceful Deportm[en]t & is a great Support to the Opera. many of the Songs were Encor'd. Some few Hisses. but upon the whole, was pretty well receiv'd (Hopkins). Books of the Opera to be sold at the Theatre. A new English Opera, the Royal Shepherd-the Musick composed by Mr Rush.-Siga Cremonini made her first appearance,--sings ver fine,--very graceful deportment, and is a great support to the Opera.--Some hisses--Many of the songs encored. Upon the whole was well liked...On this occasion the Stage was cut near two feet and a half to enlarge the orchestra, to make it contain the additional performers who belong to the Opera House, on whose account the Opera cannot be performed Tuesdays and Saturdays (Hopkins Diary-MacMillan)
