[This was Sga Lorenzini's 1st appearance in England.] Public Advertiser, 25 Dec.: The spirit of Vestris seems to diffuse itself throughout the whole Body of Dancers at this Theatre; even the Figurants acquit themselves in a manner that deserves the encouragement of the Public

Event Comment: [In the 1st ballet the playbill lists Mme Rossi, but she did not dance. As the 2nd ballet the playbill announces Il Ratto delle Sabine, but Mme Rossi was ill, which "rendered a verbal apology unavoidable. 'Mme Rossi was in hopes that her wish to court your favour would enable her to overcome her illness, but it has been as sudden as it is now alarming. She has just been let blood. The manager therefore intreats your indulgence, and that you will accept of Apelles and Campaspe instead of the Grand Ballet, which cannot possibly be performed.' . . . Henry performed the part of Alexander with the greatest propriety" (Public Advertiser, 19 Dec.).]

Event Comment: A new Serious Opera [1st time; SER 2, librettist unknown; a pasticcio]; the Music by Tarchi [who wrote Rubinelli's part, and by Anfossi, Cherubini, Piccinni]. "Rubinelli is a musician of the first class . . . His voice and his science, though both pre-eminent, are never forced forward beyond their proper rank, which, in a musician, is the rank of subserviency to the feelings. The musician that is not felt is no musician" (Public Advertiser, 6 May)

Event Comment: A Serious Opera in 2 acts; the music entirely by Handel, and selected from the various Operas set by that admirable composer, under the direction of [i.e. arranged and added to by] Dr Arnold. Benefit for Carnevale, deputy manager. No receipts listed. "In order to induce the king to visit the theatre called his own [see 17 Mar.], but which he seldom frequented, the Giulio Cesare of Handel was revived, or rather a medley from his Italian works, for little of the original music was retained, and many of his most favorite songs from other operas were introduced, Verdi prati [from Alcina], Dove sei [from Rodelinda], Rendi sereno il ciglio [from Sosarme], and others. This ancient music was particularly suited to Rubinelli, and was familiar to Mara, both of whom sung it incomparably well" (Mount-Edgcumbe, 61)
