"[In the last scene] the expiring tone with which [Kemble] pronounces 'Cover me'; his shivering, when wrapt round in the imperial robes; his wan and wasted countenance; the manner of his labouriously drawing his legs together, and their aguish knocking when they meet, surpass all description" (Monthly Mirror, Jan. 1796, p. 180). Event Comment: The father of the runaway siren of Covent Garden [Miss Brown; see 16 Dec. 1775] apprehended the little wanton truant at her aunt's in the city, forcing her into a coach, drove off with her into the country: however, she had not been carried above five miles before her cries raised the inhabitants of a village; whom she soon worked to her purpose by declaring that the man (her father) was carrying her away by force, in order to ship her for America....The peasants released her, when she run to town across the country, and has not been re-taken since by her father (Morning Post, 5 Jan.)

Event Comment: It having appeared to be the Sense of a considerable Part of the Audience on Monday Night that the One Shilling Gallery should be restored, the Proprietor has already given Directions that their Wishes may be obeyed with all possible Expedition. With respect to the other Point, upon which some difference of Opinion still continued throughout the Performance, it is necessary to declare, that without absolute Ruin to the Property, this Theatre cannot be opened at lower Prices of Admission. The Proprietor therefore relies with Confidence on the Justice and Protection of the Public should any Attempt be made again to interrupt the Performance upon this Ground. [The new Upper, or One-Shilling, Gallery was constructed within two weeks, and opened on 1 Oct.
