Performance Comment: ["For the certain cure of the Spleen; Essence of Comicality prepared by Dr Shuter. There is no question but laughing will cure the most inveterate dulness: the ancients affirmed it, and the Cures Dr Shuter has lately performed in Ireland experience this truth. For the benefit of his own countrymen he once more has opened his Warehouse in the George Inn Yard, West Smithfield, where his friends may find a safe, easy and pleasant operation. For, as splenetic persons are apt to have bad distempers, and be miserably low-spirited at times, he, at once removes all obstructions, restores the muscles of the face to their usual tone of risbility, and gradually clears the countenance. The afflicted may depend on these effects. It is to be had as above, with printed directions, at the following prices, viz.: 2s. 6d.; 2s.; 18d.; 1s.; and 6d." This may be an advance notice. It is repeated on W., Th., F., S., and M., 2, 3, 4, 5, 7 Sept. in the Public Advertiser. Event Comment: Mainpiece: Never acted there. Neville MS Diary: Both theatres opened again with The English Merchant. Went into the Pit of cg. Shuter did Freeport pretty well, but had not that appearance of blunt honesty which Yates has in that character....I like Miss Pope better in Molly than Mrs Mattocks. Mrs Goodman by Mrs Ward, who is a very different figure now from what she was some years ago. Her daughter did Amelia pretty well, but has a stiffiness and an indifferent voice. End Act III, The Irish Lilt-The celebrated dancer Aldridge, Sga Manesiere. Entertainment Harlequin Dr Faustus. I hope this emulation between the 2 Houses will cause exertion. Receipts: #146 8s. 6d. Charges: #63 (Account Book), [#325 9s. 6d. marks the largest house in money value this season. Shuter advertised his benefit early, then on 28 March inserted this puff in the Public Advertiser: [Mrs Centlivre's Comedies have a vein of pleasantry in them that will always be relish'd. She knew the Genius of this nation, and she wrote up to the spirit of it; her Bold Stroke for a Wife, was a masterpiece that much increased her reputation: it establish'd that of Kit Bullock, a smart sprightly actor. His performance of Col. Feignwell was greatly applauded. Shuter has judiciously chosen to play to at his own benefit, and everyone that knows his powers, knows he will play it at least with drollery and justice equal to him."
