Pepys, Diary: Walking through Lincoln's Inn Fields observed at the Opera a new play, Twelfth Night, was acted there, and the King there; so I, against my own mind and resolution, could not forbear to go in, which did make the play seem a burthen to me, and I took no pleasure at all in it; and so after it was done went home with my mind troubled for my going thither, after my swearing to my wife that I would never go to a play without her

Event Comment: The King's Company. The date of the first performance is not known, but the fact that the play was entered in the Term Catalogues in February 1681@2 and advertised in The Loyal Protestant, 7 March 1681@2, suggests a premiere in December 1681. A certain performance on 14 Jan. 1681@2 may indicate, however, that the play did not have its first performance until that month. Event Comment: Rich's Company. The date of the premiere is not knwon, but the Dedication is dated February 1699@1700, the play was entered in the Term Catalogues in February 1699@1700, and advertised in the Flying Post, 16 March 1699@1700. The latest likely date for the first production is January 1700, but the play may have appeared in late December as a rival to lif's production of I Henry IV early in January 1700. Cibber, Apology, I, 275: But the Master of the Revels, who then licens'd all Plays for the Stage, assisted this Reformation [of the morality of the stage] with a more zealous Severity than ever. He would strike out whole Scenes of a vicious or immoral Character, tho' it were visibly shewn to be reform'd or punish'd; a severe Instance of this kind falling upon my self may be an Excuse for my relating it: When Richard the Third (as I alter'd it from Shakespear) came from his Hands to the Stage, he expung'd the whole first Act without sparing a Line of it. This extraordinary Stroke of a Sic volo occasion'd my applying to him for the small Indulgence of a Speech or two, that the other four Acts might limp on with a little less Absurdity! no! he had no leisure to consider what might be separately inoffensive. [Repeated in the bills.] By His Majesty's Company. [First production of an English stage play at this house since 18 Nov. 1710, though touring French or Italian companies had played French plays as late as the spring of 1727. The location verified by Isaac Reed, who attended the performance.

Event Comment: Will be reviv'd a Play Not acted these 100 Years. Written by Shakespear. To begin at 6 p.m. 4s., 2s. 6d., 1s. 6d. Daily Advertiser, 12 Sept.: Last night the much-admir'd Play of Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet was reviv'd....Many Persons of Distinction were in the Pit and Gallery, who could not find room in the Boxes, which were all bespoke. [Note that Cibber has omitted the concert formula.

Event Comment: By Command of His Majesty. The King is gone to the Play, which is King John; he has hardly ever bespoke any other than Shakespeare's historical plays, all which they say he has ordered to be revived, and takes great pleasure in (Charlotte Fermor to Countess of Pomfret.--Hist.
