Event Comment: In consequence of the sudden Indisposition of Mrs Kemble, Inkle and Yarico [in place of Cross Partners, advertised on playbill of 31 Aug.] is obliged to be postponed. [In mainpiece the playbill retains Palmer Jun. as the Officer, but "An apology was made by Palmer for his Son who (as he said), not knowing of the sudden change [of play], was gone to the country, but the son thought proper to give his father the lie, by appearing in the boxes, a few minutes after, with a girl. Farley performed his part, and the audience seemed rejoiced at the change" (Thespian Magazine, Oct. 1792, p.102). Afterpiece in place of Katharine and Petruchio, advertised on playbill of 31 Aug.

Event Comment: Powell: In Consequence of Palmer not coming in time to the Theatre, the Audience were kept in waiting and the Play, which was ordered by Mr Sheridan to begin 5 minutes before the usual time [6:30], could not be begun till within Ten minutes of Seven o'Clock. Benson being lame Fisher went on as Casimir and Caulfield doubled the Part with his own. Event Comment: Benefit for the Widow and Three Orphan Children of the late Mr Benson. [Address by John Taylor, Poems, I, 62.] "Benson [who committed suicide on 19 May] was remarkable for a very retentive memory, which enabled him on the slightest notice to become a substitute for almost any performer who might be suddenly disabled from appearing" (European Magazine, June 1796, p. 397). The house was a very good one, but it has been said that Sheridan went to the Treasury and carried off the money, so that Benson's widow and children never got a sixpence" (Genest, VII, 245). Event Comment: "It was with extreme regret that we perceived the ravages of time in the person of [Mrs Crawford, who had not acted in London since 12 Apr. 1785], tho' we were much consoled in observing that his influence is not equally apparent in her abilities...The blaze is gone, but there is a richness in the setting lustre...Kemble is evidently [Johnston's] model, and he followed him so closely, as even to the crossing of the legs in dying; so that where he was best, his efforts seemed to be the effect of imitation" (True Briton, 24 Oct.). "Mrs Crawford has had her day; but the sun of her genius has long sunk beneath the horizon...Many parts of her performance, we were sorry to observe, evinced the most evident decline of powers, and her tremulous accents, the debility of which was rendered the more striking from the want of several teeth, proclaimed that her days of play and action were nearly brought to a close...She was received with reiterated plaudits throughout...Nature has been very bountiful in supplying [Johnston] with a voice of much compass and melody, but he does not appear to have paid much attention to the cultivation of her favours. His transitions are often abrupt, and sometimes discordant; and the management of his tones is of so strange a nature that it appears more like two distinct voices than a judicious modulation of his natural accents" (Morning Herald, 24 Oct.). Of course, the thunder of guns and mortars, with the suffocating smoke, stench and vapour which pervaded every part of the house rouzed the audience from a state of lethargy and torpor...and the curtain dropped with less opposition and reprobation than on the preceding night" (Dramatic Censor, I, 350).
