Event Comment: Oratorio: In two Parts, Principal Instrumental Performers as 27 Feb., but omitted: Seutze. [The playbill retains Miss Poole, but "Miss Poole, it appears, could not perform at the Oratorio on Wednesday last, because she had ate pork for dinner" (Morning Herald, 9 Mar.). Morning Post, 10 Mar., prints a public statement from Miss Poole apologizing for her "neglecting to attend and perform her duty on Wednesday last".

Event Comment: A New Heroic Opera [1st performed at Fontainbleau, 1773], in 3 acts, with Chorusses under the direction of Kelly. The Subscribers and the Public are respectfully entreated to observe that, at the pressing desire of the Subscribers, this Theatre will now be opened, without waiting for the arrival of the Performers expected from abroad; consequently the Entertainments cannot be expected to be so complete as otherwise they would have been if the opening had been delayed until the arrival of all the Company. Event Comment: Opera: With Chorusses under the Direction of Kelly. Ballet: Paul et Virginie [advertised in Morning Chronicle, 1 Jan.] is still unavoidably postponed on account of the indisposition of Mme Hilligsberg. The Subscribers are most respectfully entreated to be careful to whom they give their Tickets, as many improper persons have lately presented themsleves for admission into the Theatre with those Tickets; and the Subscribers are requested to observe that, in future, persons of this description will be conducted directly to the indentical Boxes to which such Tickets belong, instead of being admitted into any other part of the Theatre. Event Comment: "The Italian singers, male and female, whom I saw on this stage, distinguished themselves by good action, which is uncommon among the Italians. But the Italian opera would instantly be abandoned, notwithstanding the talents of the singers and the beauty of the music, if dancing were not the powerful magnet which attracts the Londoners. All Italian operas are, therefore, abridged, divertisements introduced between the acts, and the ballets considerably lengthened, in order to gratify the public taste" (Goede, p. 263)

Event Comment: Benefit for the Fund, established for the Relief of those Performers who, through Infirmity, shall be obliged to retire from the Stage. State of the Theatrical Fund, instituted at Covent Garden in the year 1765, and confirmed by Act of Parliament, 1776. This Institution, calculated to provide for, and relieve aged and infirm Performers and their Families, has not been successful enough during the course of 33 years, to acquire any particular Patronage, but has been raised and supported (some few private Donations and Bequests excepted) merely through the liberal Contributions of its Members. Several aged Persons are now, and have been for many years, oeconomically maintained by it, although the Interest arising from the general Sum already amassed is not equal to one half of the Claims of its Annuitants. The other Portion is entirely supplied from the weekly Contributions of the Performers. Applications to the Public in behalf of this salutary Institution have rarely been made, and sometimes very ineffectually. On these Considerations therefore the Lovers of Dramatic Entertainments are respectfully addressed for their Encouragement at This Evening's Performance. (See Genest, VII, 365-66.) Receipts: #131 7s. Didelot takes the liberty to assure the Nobility and Gentry that he is under no engagement in lieu of a Benefit, but entirely relies on the generosity and patronage of the Subscribers and the Public, whose protection he has ever studiously endeavoured to merit

Event Comment: Lover's Vows. In Consequence of the Approbation which the above Play has received from the Town, various Translations, or pretended Translations of the work from which it was taken, have been offered for publication to some eminent Booksellers, who honourably declining such purchase, have given Information to the Manager of the attempted Imposition. The Public are therefore respectfully acquainted that the Play, as now performing at this Theatre, was rewritten from a literal Translation, sold to the Proprietor by an Agent of the German Author, and has been adapted to the English Stage by considerable Alterations in Plot & Incidents. The Piece will not be published till the 20th Night of its representation, when it will be submitted to the Reader, with the Name of Mrs Inchbald prefixed to the Publication. Receipts: #432 18s. 6d.
