Event Comment: Mainpiece: By Particular Desire. [Cross suggests The Country Wife this night, but the Public Advertiser indicates The Miser. The Country Wife had been advertised on the advance notice.

Event Comment: Farce in two acts never performed before. Full prices. [See advertisement to Reed's 1761 edition where he accuses Foote of taking the character of Mrs Cole in the Minor from Mrs Snarewell.] A new farce wrote by one Reed, a ropemaker, brought out by Mr Foote--went off tolerable--hissed a little at the end (Hopkins MS Notes). [See advertisement for the Universal Register Office General Advertiser 18 Oct. 1750: This Office being much approv'd and encouraged especially by Ladies and Gentlemen in the Country, we have daily enquiries by those who are just come to town, and many letters from those in the country to procure houses and lodgings, both furnished and unfurnished, for single Gentlemen, Ladies, and Families for the winter; and also boarding houses as well in French Families as in English Families." Announces its books open to any who wish to register there. The afterpiece met with trouble from the Licenser. Larpent MS 189 and 196, indicate the exceptionable passages to be those using profanity, and those of Mrs Snarewell's capable of double entendre, principally about the comfort she received from Mr Watchlight who was called twice out of bed to pray-"so ernest in his ejaculations, &c."

Event Comment: Letter from Impartial to the editor of the Public Advertiser: The managers of the Opera most certainly think themselves peculiarly unfortunate in having incurred the disapprobation of your correspondent Timotheus....If...it has been found...that this Demi-critic has given his opinion to the public too precipitately, little regard will be paid to his animadversions, and the managers who, perhaps, will be found to have spared neither trouble or expense, will meet with the support they solicit....The splenetic gentleman, perhaps, resides chiefly in the country, and only came to town to see some Raree Shew, consequently he might never have heard of our justly celebrated Lovattini, Guadagni, Moriggi, and so forth, with whose performances we have been so highly entertained, to whom the Nightengale, as he is pleased to call Giaccomazzi, and Luciani, for the demi-characters in the Comic will make no inconsiderable additions; from hence I conclude, that our Opera entertainments this season will exceed any we have ever had in this country

Event Comment: [The following day Garrick received a letter from L. A. Ein Schweitzer: "As you spare nothing in adding new characters etc. to the Masquerade...I hope you will introduce in it the dress as described hereunder, being the first, perhaps, that ever appeared in this country. It is that of a country maid of the Cantoon of Bern; and as the Allemande is really a Swiss Dance, nobody could with more propriety wear it than Sga Vidini who would greatly shine in it." The hairdo is described in detail--ringlets, with cap and small feather, and no powder. The jacket, skirt, and socks (red jacket with black trim, black skirt, red stockings) are described in detail. "N.B. The dress in my opinion would also do very well for a Colombine. The man's dress is not suitable to a dance." Folger Library Copy, Garrick Correspondence, Vol. IV, MS Letter 42.

Event Comment: Last time of performing the afterpiece before the Benefits. A duel with pistols between George? Garrick and Baddeley on account of G. Garrick remon[stratin]g with Baddeley on [receiving] his wife's salary. Baddeley fir'd then G. G. fir'd in the air, and a reconciliation took place (Winston MS 10, from Dr Burney's News Clippings). Event Comment: Afterpiece: A New Musical Entertainment in 2 Acts [by Theodosius Forrest] never pebformed. With a New Overture by Dr Arnold. The Airs chiefly selected from the most eminent masters. [Larpent MS 392 confirms the character names and adds a Country Lad and a Country Lass. The Westminster Magazine for Oct. condemned the Weathercock: "To speak of this piece as a literary compostiion, it was throughout a dull, uninteresting narrative, told in duller numbers. Considered in a dramatic light, it was still less defensible....The overture by Dr Arnold was trite, except the last movement, which had great merit, and was universally admired....We expected in spite of the numerous Orders sent in by the Author and Managers, that it would have met with its deserved fate on the first representation, it was, however, somehow carried through that and a second night's hearing-on the third evening, however, it received a formal damnation."

Event Comment: The father of the runaway siren of Covent Garden [Miss Brown; see 16 Dec. 1775] apprehended the little wanton truant at her aunt's in the city, forcing her into a coach, drove off with her into the country: however, she had not been carried above five miles before her cries raised the inhabitants of a village; whom she soon worked to her purpose by declaring that the man (her father) was carrying her away by force, in order to ship her for America....The peasants released her, when she run to town across the country, and has not been re-taken since by her father (Morning Post, 5 Jan.)
