It refers to the King's departure from Greenwich on the Royal Charlotte yacht, 30 Oct. 1797, to visit Lord Duncan's fleet at the Nore. The visit was subsequently cancelled because of inclement weather]: With new Scenery, and Machinery. The Music partly new [by William Linley] and partly compiled; with an introductory Full Piece. In the course of the Piece a View of Greenwich Hospital, and an exact Representation of the Departure of the Royal Yatch [sic]. To conclude with a View of the British Fleet, and the Dutch Prizes [taken at Camperdown. 11 Oct.]. [These were included in all subsequent performances.] Books of the Songs to be had in the Theatre. Event Comment: Benefit for Simpson, Powel, Rees & Mrs Henley. 3rd piece [1st time; P 1]: Selected from The Rape of Proserpine, Lord Mayor's Day, Harlequin's Museum, Harlequin Skeleton, Harlequin Sorcerer, Aladin, &c. In the course of the Compilation will be introduced: The Birth and Emancipation of Harlequin from the Egg-shell-the Dying Scene-the Skeleton-His Renovation-the celebrated Gladiator Scene, &c. In particular, among many surprising Escapes, the Jump through the Tea-chest; Flight from one Balcony to the other; a Leap over twelve Soldiers with fixed Bayonets; the Flight back and Jump through a Tamborine-and (for that night only) Simpson will run perpendicular up the Wall of a House, 30 Feet High. To conclude with a View of the Grotto of Magic. There are some imitations which almost identify the originals, but [Rees's as Dromio] was a vile caricature, which would never have been recognized but for the specification in the play bills" (Monthly Mirror, June 1798, p. 371). Interspersed With a Variety of favorite old Airs, popular Songs, Parodies, &c. The Overture and new Songs composed and the Music in general arranged by Moorehead. The Machinery invented and executed by Cresswell. Books of the Songs to be had in the Theatre, price Six-pence. Morning Chronicle, 16 Oct. 1799: This day is published The Naval Pillar (price not listed). The afterpiece had reference to the contemplated erection of a "Naval Pillar" on Portsdown Hill, near Portsmouth, in commemoration of the recent victbries of the English navy. A plain pillar is at the last introduced, with the names of the most celebrated admirals on a scroll, round which the sailors and their sweethearts dance with peculiar festivity. The pillar now flies open, and displays a most magnificent and appropriate spectacle--consisting of Britannia, personated by Mrs Chapman, under a rich canopy, with the figures of a sailor and a soldier for supporters, pointing to the letters G. R. over a brilliant sun, which turns on the center; shrouded in clouds above, and surrounded by angels, is a medallion of Lord Howe, and on columns on each side of the canopy are medallions of your great living naval commanders" (Monthly Visitor, Oct. 1799, p. 180). After being resumed for a night or two by the original representative [27, 31 Jan., 1 Feb.], it again devolved upon the latter gentleman [28 Jan., 5 Feb.]" (Dramatic Censor, I, 203).
