Event Comment: Afterpiece [1st time; MD 3, by Samuel Birch, adapted from Camille; ou, Le Souterrain, by Benoit Joseph Marsollier des Vivetieres, and from Les Victimes Cloitrees, by Jacques Marie Boutet de Monvel; the songs written by Thomas John Dibdin. Larpent MS 1236; not published. The playbill states that this was "Taken from the German," but London Chronicle, 12 Dec., says that its source is the same as that of The Captive of Spilburg (see dl, 14 Nov.). An examination of the MSS of these two pieces (Larpent 1230 and 1236) proves that such is unmistakably the case]: With entire new Scenes, Machinery, Dresses & Decorations. The Music composed and selected by Steibelt and Attwood. The Action of the Chorusaes, Finales, &c. under the Direction of Farley, and the Action of the Overture by Bologna Jun. Event Comment: A new Serious Opera [1st time; ser 2, by Giovanni de Gamerra]: the Music selected from the most eminent Composers [Sarti, Anfossi, Bertoni, Bianchi], under the direction of Bertoni. "The airs which Pacchierotti has chosen for himself have served to disclose in that excellent performer such powers as we had not yet discovered, uniting into one the delicate Soprano to the more majestic and manly strains of the most accomplished Contralto" (Public Advertiser, 23 Nov.)

Event Comment: By desire of many of the principal Subscribers to the Opera, the Decorations of the Masquerade will remain this Evening on the Stage. [This Masquerade had taken place the previous evening, 3 Mar.; it had been attended by over 3,000 persons, and had continued from ten o'clock at night until ten the following morning.] The second representation of Don Juan is unavoidably deferred on account of replacing the Machinery after the Masquerade to Saturday next, when it will be given with some alterations. And, on that night, positively no person will be admitted behind the scenes, it being impossible to conduct the machinery, and make the necessary changes whilst the stage is crowded with gentlemen, as was the case last Saturday evening
