Event Comment: On Thursday next Hamlet, the part of Hamlet by Barry. And on Saturday the Foundling. N.B.: All Places taken by Ladies and Gentlemen for the Foundling this night [Tuesday] will be continued for Saturday, unless notice is given to the contrary (General Advertiser). This play was for the benefit of Mr Garrick, clear of all charges; and therefore I shall at the end of the account subtract this sum from the total amount, it being return'd him again. And the reason of entering it among the rest of the sums was, because the principle [sic] treasurer should know nothing of the matter; and therefore as it stands in their books in the same manner as above, I think it proper to set it down here (Powel). Event Comment: N.B. This was Mr Packer's first appearance at Drury Lane Theatre. He had acted one night at Covent Garden in the preceding season, Johnson, in the Rehearsal and the Frenchman in Lethe, which pieces were perform'd for Mr Lee's Benefit. Mr Garrick was there, and engag'd Mr Packer, who was going to Ireland, with Mr Barry, and Mr Woodward, into the Drury Lane Company. I am writing this on the sixth of April 1801--tonight Mr Packer told me the above Particulars at Drury Lane Playhouse, where he has always remained since his first being engaged there (J. P. Event Comment: [This evening] a cause came on to be tried in the Court of Common Pleas at Westminster, in which Mr William Bates, Music Master, was Plaintiff and Spranger Barry, Esq the celebrated tragedian, defendent, upon a demand made by the plaintiff for a large sum of money due to him from the Defendent, for the performance of Miss Slack, the Plaintiff's apprentice, at the Theatre in Cork...After a short hearing a verdict was given in favour of the Plaintiff (Lloyd's Evening Post, 25-28 Nov.)
