Daily Advertiser, 18 Aug.: Last Saturday John Sterne was committed to Newgate by Justice Welch, for the Murder of Mr Matthews, an eminent Surgeon in Brook St., Holborn. [Sterne had been an usher in Mathews' Academy, was discharged, but Matthews let Sterne live in Matthews' house for a long time, then expelled him and put his belongings on the stairs. On Friday 15 Aug. Sterne got two pistols and came back to Owen's Coffee House. Here] he waited three Hours for Mr Matthews, who was gone with a Friend to the little Theatre in the Haymarket and afterwards into Company at the Pewter Platter, a publick house in Cross St. [There Sterne shot Matthews.

At fifteen Minutes past six, His Majesty went D-L-House, attended by several great Officers of State, to see the Rehearsal, but about ten o'clock a message was sent, signifying his Majesty's pleasure to have the new dramatic novel of Polly Honeycombe added to it; upon which fresh Bills were printed and pasted up...In consequence of a strict order from the managers not a single person was admitted into tne House before the doors were opened; nevertheless the Pit was filled in the space of four minutes (Gazetteer & London Daily Advertiser, 13 Dec.)

The General Advertiser reminded its readers twenty years before (11 Nov. 1748) "Clandestine marriages are illegal and punishable by the Statute of the 7th and 8th of King William, Chap. 35 under which Law the Parson shall forfeit One Hundred Pounds; and every man married without Banns or Licence shall forfeit ten Pounds, to be recovered with costs, by any Person that shall inform."

[The note about full prices and availability of books of songs, &c. accompanies each subsequent bill for Sylphs this season. The Westminster Magazine (Jan. 1774) fears the afterpiece may have been composed by Woodward. It cannot be a matter of surprise that Roscius should have escaped the infection and his spirits and constitution seems proof against the attacks of age itself; after above 30 campaigns, his ardour and execution appear rather to increase. Benedict owes all its consequence to his attachment; there is a peculiar turn of humour in this soldier that none but Mr Garrick has ever been able to enter into the true spirit of. Last night he supported the character with undiminished excellence, and in the speech where he meditates and then resolves on marriage, he soared beyond himself. Lewis came forward and acquainted the House that the part sent to Aickin was incomplete, and that he (who was to finish the Play) had never been furnished with the last speech. "In the second act [Mme Mara, who sang Andromeda] was encored in a song of Bravura . .. The amazing extent of her voice never appeared in a more conspicuous light... As to the Chorusses, we understand that they were under the immediate direction of Mme Mara, which accounts for the uncommon precision with which they were executed" (General Advertiser, 22 Mar.)

Event Comment: A new Comic Opera [1st time; COM 2], written by Charles Francis Badini, and set to music by Pasquale Anfossi. "The Author has . . . struck out ideas fit to excite the utmost powers of harmony. We do not think that he has been sufficiently seconded by Signor Anfossi. The music evidently labours under a tedious monotony" (General Advertiser, 22 May)
