[The new piano appears to be the Instrument patented in 1799 by Joseph Smith; it contained "the first real use of metal longitudinal bracing, [which] was to be under the sound-board and to replace the wooden braces, and thus provide space for the introduction of a mechanically-played tambourine" (Grove, under Pianoforte).
