[translation]: In the afternoon I went with Preswitz to the comedy, by Covent Garden, where there was a play about Henry II, but I could not very well understand the comedians, neither what they said. Mrs Barry played the King's wife and Mrs Bracegirdle his mistress, who let the King be poisoned in her presence. Sayer came and sat with us. Event Comment: Dryden to Walsh, 9 May 1693: The play I am now writeing is a feignd story: & a Tragicomedy of the nature of the Spanish Fryar: And I am sure the tale of it is likely to be diverting enough. I have plotted it all; & written two Acts of it. This morning I had their chief Comedian whom they call Solon [Dogget], with me; to consult with him concerning his own Character: & truly I thinke he has the best Understanding of any man in tihe Playhouse (Letters of John Dryden, p. 54)

Event Comment: Dryden to Walsh, 12 Dec. 1693: Your Critique, by your description of its bulk, will be to large for a preface to my Play, which is now studying; but cannot be acted till after Christmasse is over. I call it Love Triumphant; or, Nature will prevaile:...I have remembered you to all your friends; and in particular to Congreve; who sends you his play, as a present from him selfe, by this conveyance; & much desires the honour of being better known to you. His Double Dealer is much censured by the greater part of the Town: and is defended onely by the best Judges, who, you know, are commonly the fewest. Yet it gets ground daily, and has already been acted Eight times. The women thinke he has exposd their Bitchery too much; & the Gentlemen, are offended with him; for the discovery of their follyes: & the way of their Intrigues, under the notion of friendship to their Ladyes Husbands. My verses, which you will find before it, were written before the play was acted, but I neither altered them nor do I alter my opinion of the play (The Letters of John Dryden, pp. 62-63)

Event Comment: London Gazette, No 2982, 7-11 June 1694: On Thursday next will be a new Consort of Musick in Charles-street, Covent Garden; where a Gentlewoman that Sings that hath one of the best Voices in England, not before heard in publick, to be continued every Thursday for a Month

Event Comment: Post Boy, No. 453, 29-31 March 1698: This day, being the 31st of March, at the Request of several Persons of Quality, will be performed in York Buildings, a French Consort, by some of the best Voices lately come from France

Event Comment: Betterton's Company. It is not certain that this play was given at this time, but Vanbrugh, writing on 25 Dec. 1699, states that Thomas Dogget, who had been acting in Norwich, was in London "last Week," and acted six times, presumably on 18, 19, 20, 21, 22, 23 Dec. 1699. The Amorous Widow is a likely play for this week, as Barnaby Brittle was one of Dogget's best roles. In addition, the Inner Temple, which usually requested popular plays, selected it for its revels on 3 Feb. 1699@1700. Nearly all the individuals in the cast in the 1710 edition acted in London during this season, with two exceptions: Fieldhouse and Mrs Hunt. Their roles may have been played by them or by other performers if they were not in the company at this time. I owe the suggestion that this was the play in which Dogget appeared to Professor Lucyle Hook

Event Comment: John Vanbrugh to the Earl of Manchester, 25 Dec. 1699: Miss Evans the dancer at the New Playhouse is dead too; a feaver Slew her in eight and forty hours. She's much lamented by the Towne as well as the House, who can't well bare her loss; Matters running very low with 'em this Winter; if Congreve's Play [The Way of the World] don't help 'em they are undone. 'Tis a Comedy and will be play'd about Six weeks hence, nobody has seen it yet. Liveridge is in Ireland, he Owes so much money he dare not come over, so for want of him we han't had one Opera play'd this Winter; tho' Purcell has set one New One and Fingar another. We have got the Woman from the Chesire Cheese upon the Stage, who has the best Voyce for't by much that has been there at any time. We have the Emperors Crooaed Eunuch here, Francisco. They give him a hundred and twenty Guineas for five times. He has sung Once and was well likt. Event Comment: London Post, 13-16 Dec.: There being a French Scaramouch Dance betwixt the second and third Acts, a certain Person went in a Frolick, Incognito, up into the upper Gallery, and so pelted the Dancers with Oranges, that they were forced to quit the Stage, and the Play-house was all in an Uproar; but some of the Auditory perceiving who threw them, cryed out, fling him down into the Pit, which so startled him, that he was forced to make the best of his way down Stairs; however, a Constable having been sent for in the mean time, he was secured. Preface to Ximena (1719): The Fop's Fortune lagg'd on the Fourth Day and only held up its Head by the Heels of the French Tumblers

Powlett, and I went to the Play together, for the Benefit of Johnson, who is the best Comedian this Day upon the Stage, and I believe as true and good a Player as ever was in any Age, for the Parts that he plays

Event Comment: The first of Twelve Grand Concerts. In Daily Courant, 9 Jan., proposals had been issued for setting up by subscription a monthly concert for the first Wednesday of each month. There were never to be fewer than three of the best singers and nineteen performers in all. Each subscriber was to pay to Trustees John Shipton and Thomas Ives one guinea for a year. The concerts were to begin when there were 350 subscribers. On this date 100 subscriptions had been received

Weekly Journal or Saturday's Post, 24 Jan.: Sir Walter Raleigh has been acted with Success; ...the Author, having, for his first Attempt in the Dramatick Way, shewn an uncommon Genius: The Diction seems to be extreamly just; the Sentiments noble; and, were it not for some Irregularities in working up the Catastrophe, it would be the best Tragedy that has appeared these many Years

Event Comment: John Vanbrugh to Jacob Tonson (Vanbrugh, Works, IV, 125): The Opera will begin about the 10th of March under the Academy of Musick. It will be a very good one this year, and a better the next. They having engag'd the best Singers in Italy, at a great Price. Such as I believe will bring the Expences to about twice as much as the Receipts. But the fund Subscribed being about #20000, may probably Support it, till Musick takes such root, as to Subsist with less aid. The King gives a #1000 a year to it

Event Comment: At the Desire of several Ladies of Quality. N.B. Whereas it has been reported, that several of the best French Comedians would soon return to Paris: This is to certify, that the said Report is totally groundless, for they will remain here all the Winter Season

London Journal, 20 Oct.: The Beginning of November will be acted Sir Richard Steel's new Play, which has been some Time in Rehearsal;...it is thought by some excellent Judges to be the best Comedy that ever appear'd on the English Stage

Event Comment: MMist's, 6 Jan.. We hear that in a certain Alley in Wapping during the Holidays the Coronation of Anna Bullenv has been represented by Punch's Company of Actors with very great Applause; and that all that have seen it agree, that they have far excell'd their Brethren of Drury-Lane in the Conduct of that Farce; and, it is the common Opinion, that the wooden Actors have much the best Heads for Theatrical Decorations

Event Comment: DDaily Journal, 16 Dec.: The Musical Society of Gentlemen, who for some time have play'd at the Swan in Exchange Alley, are to perform next Wednesday in the Great Room in the Crown Tavern...that Room being judged the best in Town for Performances of that Kind

Event Comment: This Theatre is proportioned to the Actors, and contains a great Variety of correct and beautiful Scenes, Machines, and all the regular Decorations and Changes incident to a Theatre, and will be varied to the Subject. The Musick is set and performed by some of the best Hands
